Around the Energiewende in Four Days

What does Jules Verne’s classic “Around the World in Eighty Days” have in common with four days of Sino-German workshops on the Energiewende? – Only a few days to overcome and cover a variety of challenges. This week, the Sino-German Energy Partnership took up the challenge to co-host and organize four days of workshops circumnavigating the whole energy transition.

In four days, more than 120 experts from academia and government discussed topics such as energy efficiency (and networks), energy transition policies, energy system modelling, decarbonization and renewable energy scenarios until 2050, the role of hydrogen and synthetic fuels, future mobility and electricity markets. The workshops helped to share challenges and best practice solutions of the energy transition between German and Chinese experts.

The three-day workshop series “Analyzing and Designing Policies and Markets for Large-Scale Utilization of Renewable Energy Sources” from June 25 to 27, was co-hosted by Fraunhofer ISI, Beihang University and GIZ. The fourth workshop on the topics of greening industry parks, energy efficiency networks and demand response was organized by the National Energy Conservation Center of NDRC (NECC) and GIZ (June 28).

While both sides’ experts shared many best practices and ideas to overcome the Energiewende’s challenges, the lively discussions showed that many challenges remain. Challenges, which call for an even deeper Sino-German and international energy cooperation – just as Phileas Fogg and Passepartout had help on all continents. Hence, stay tuned for many more activities by the Sino-German Energy Partnership during the next 76 days and beyond.
