Facilitates dialogue on provincial energy transition between China and Europe

Sino-German Energy Transition project co-hosted sub-forum at 2022 Taiyuan Energy Low-Carbon Development Forum

On 2 September 2022, GIZ co-hosted the Second Europe-China Workshop on Clean Energy Transition under the BMWK supported Sino-German Energy Transition project. The conference is a sub-forum for 2022 Taiyuan Energy Low-Carbon Development Forum. Taking place once per year in Taiyuan, the capital of China’s coal-dominated province Shanxi, the Taiyuan Energy Low Carbon Development Forum is a national-level, international, and professional forum approved by the State Council of China. Opened by Han Zheng, Vice Premier of State Council this year, the Forum provides a platform for intergovernmental energy dialogues, international exchanges and cooperation, and results transformation and publication. In a roundtable between the Governor of Shanxi province, secretary of a provincial party committee and diplomatic envoys in China, representatives from the German embassy in China introduced current Sino-German cooperation on energy sector, and the efforts from Germany in supporting China's energy sector development and transition.

This year GIZ hosted the sub-forum together with Agora Energiewende, Danish Energy Agency, EU-China Energy Cooperation Platform, Xinzhou Municipal People’s Government, Shanxi Energy Research Institute, China Energy Engineering Corporation and Siyuan Carbon Neutral Technology. The theme of this year’s sub-forum is bilateral cooperation opportunities on energy transition at the provincial/local level. Against the backdrop of COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with ongoing geopolitical conflicts, as well as global economic turmoil, the Europe-China Workshop on Clean Energy Transition strives to strengthen exchange between Chinese and European stakeholders at local level in the field of low carbon energy transition, aiming to nurture a bilateral exchange mechanism through open policy dialogue and mutually beneficial innovations in areas of technology, business model and institutional reform. Mr. Martin Hoffman, head of cluster sustainable transition of GIZ in China delivered the opening remark jointly with other co-hosts.
