As a key instrument for the business-to-government exchange for German companies in China, the German Local Business Advisory Council (BAC) meeting took place for the 7th time on 25 November 2022. The BAC meeting brought together actors of the German private sector in China and representatives from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) as well as the German Embassy in Beijing to discuss recent developments, challenges and opportunities for the German industry in China.

The meeting was centered around supply chain decarbonization strategies. Speakers from the Chinese Ministry for Industry and Information Technology, the German Foreign Chamber of Commerce in Beijing and TÜV Süd provided an overview on China’s policy framework and strategic considerations for supply chain decarbonization.

The open discussion stimulated insightful perspectives on the industry actions, challenges, and best practices to reduce carbon emissions within their supply chain. While most participating companies made clear commitments to corporate decarbonization goals, the main challenges expressed regard the comparability of suppliers, transparency of emissions within the supply chain, and missing incentives and rewards for corporate decarbonization.

The Sino-German Energy Partnership will revise the perceived challenges from the BAC meeting and reflect them in the design of future activities. This will provide support and value for the German energy industry in China by integrating in political dialogue agenda and future implementation of project activities.
