First time in three years – Chinese delegation came to Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue

On 28 March, the delegation of China’s National Energy Administration (NEA), led by Mr. Zhang Jianhua, director of NEA, attended this year’s Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue (BETD). It was the first time in three years, that a Chinese delegation participated BETD physically in Berlin. During the Opening Panel “The Energy Crisis - A Global Tipping Point for the Energy Transition?” Mr. Zhang participated in the discussion and emphasized China’s determination to meet its carbon peaking and neutrality targets He also highlighted international cooperation in the promotion of renewable energy development.

China and Germany continue direct exchange on energy transition and climate goals

In the morning of 28 March, Mr. Patrick Graichen, State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), held a bilateral meeting with Mr. Zhang Jianhua, director of the NEA. Both sides exchanged their efforts to achieve the energy transition and meet their respective climate goals. Germany wants to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045, while China set the two goals of peaking carbon emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality before 2060. Topics of their discussion included the integration of renewable energies, power market reforms, coal phase-out and more. Both sides emphasized the significance of strengthening the Sino-German exchange and cooperation on the energy transition.

Towards a global energy transition – the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue

This year’s BETD took place from 28-29 March and gathered more than 2.000 guests from over 60 countries. Since its inception in 2015, the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue (BETD) has become one of the world’s most important forums on the global energy transition. In a high-caliber conference program held over the course of two days at the Federal Foreign Office, the BETD facilitates personal exchange between high-ranking government representatives, global business leaders, scientists, leaders of international organizations and NGOs. The Sino-German Energy Partnership has been supporting the participation of Chinese high-level energy representatives as well as the bilateral exchanges on energy transition topics between both countries.
